Indian J Psychiatry in PUBMED - UPDATE 1

Dear all,

I am really overwhelmed by the compliments pouring in regarding inclusion of IJP in PUBMED CENTRAL. Already many enquiries from some of the authors regarding the details of inclusion – whether prospective, retrospective and the early the entry of the articles to be published in the future issues in PUBMED. I will be updating you from time to time as the details are available. Some topical points which are very important are being detailed here:

For the journals indexed with PubMedCentral, the articles do not appear in PubMed for almost 4-5 weeks. This is because the XML conversion of an issue takes about 8-10 days, once we send the XML to PMC, they take a week to ten days to check and put it online in PMC. Then the data is sent to PubMed. Since PubMed is the most important bibliographic source for us to get readers who would cite our articles, it is important that our articles are available for PubMed as early as possible.
On request, PMC has agreed that we can provide data directly to PubMed before the issues appear online on PMC. However, to do so we must qualify for “Print with Electronic Articles Prepublished Model” according to their guidelines. This means that our online issues should be available at least 2 weeks prior to the scheduled publication date i.e. if it is Jan-Feb or Jan-Mar issue it should be available online by 15 December.
If we can provide data to PubMed in advance, we can even print the PubMed ID in the print issues. Early availability in PubMed would also increase the visibility of the journal and I will assure you that the editorial team will strive to meet this deadline by this year end – i.e., for the Vol 52, starting 2010.
To achieve this all newly added journals in PMC have to follow the timeline strictly from now onwards and I seek the cooperation of all concerned.

Thanking you,
Yours Sincerely,

Dr. T.S. SATHYANARAYANA RAO
Editor, Indian Journal of Psychiatry

Indian Journal of Psychiatry: News from the Editor's office

Dear all,

CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL!

I am very happy to announce that the Indian Journal of Psychiatry has been cleared for PubMed central by NLM and we should be there fully by month end. It was a long cherished dream of all the members to have our journal in PubMed. I am very happy that the mission I envisaged in the beginning of my term has fructified today. I am grateful to my president Dr. E. Mohan Das who stood by me all through. I am also grateful to our President Elect Dr. Ajit Avasthi, the General Secretary Dr. Govind M. Bang, Treasurer Dr. Asim Kumar Malik, immediate past Presidents Dr. P.C. Shastri and Dr. Indla Ramasubba reddy. It is all the hard work of each one of the editorial team members and I will always be grateful to Dr. G. Swaminath, Dr. G. Prasad Rao, Dr. Roy Abraham Kallilvayalil, Dr. Ajit Bhide and Dr. Sandeep Grover. I must remember the names of all the editorial board members, the journal committee, Indian and International Advisers, the reviewers and the authors who made this possible. Ultimately much of the credit must go to Dr. Sahu and his team at Medknow Publications, Mumbai who are responsible for this achievement. My sincere thanks also go to Dr. Mezzich and the World Psychiatric Association (WPA), in particular Dr. Helen Hermann, Dr. Jair Mari, Dr. Vikram Patel, Dr. Christian Keiling and others.

Time being our journal will appear prospectively in the PubMed. The task of inclusion of retrospective issues involves substantial cost. I am confident that once approved by EC / GB, the inclusion of retrospective issues can be considered. I am working out the cost involved with the publisher and will be back to you with the further news once the information is fully gathered.

For the Time being:

Three issues are in PubMed Central. These will be online in PubMed and linked from PubMed to our sites in 3-4 and 5-7 days respectively.

The link from PubMed Central is :

World Schizophrenia Day

World Schizophrenia Day – 2009 was observed by IPS-KB & Agadi Hospital – Psychiatry Department on 21st May 2009.

It was an hour programme for the public of Wilson Garden, Bangalore.

10 posters in English and Kannada were displayed in the restaurants, banks, temple, clinics and Abhayashram of Wilson Garden.

In total 85 people were there. The snacks were sponsored by IPS-KB. Agadi Hospital, Wilson Garden, Bangalore gave the space and the audio system and secretarial help.

Dr. Saranya Devanathan gave a brief introduction about Erawadi tragedy, Human rights situation of mentally ill and the disability act 1995.
Dr. Supriya Shankar, gave signs and symptoms of schizophrenia, both in acute phase and in chronic phase.
Since Dr. Mamatha Shetty was held up elsewhere, Dr. Saranya Devanathan spoke on medical, psychosocial and rehabilitative treatment options.
50 minutes were spent on discussions, which brought out all the details of schizophrenia.

Here is the sample of questions:

Whether only the rich and stressed out people will suffer? Is it hereditary? If so, how to prevent schizophrenia in their children? Drugs are expensive, how to afford them? How much % of people become all right with treatment? Is this not depression? How to detect schizophrenia in children? In a village, how to convince the relatives not to take them for removing ‘black magic’? In what way, I can help my friend who has schizophrenia? What benefits the government gives for them? They don’t accept treatment. How to bring them to the doctor? Is it that only the poor and uneducated treat them badly? How to reduce the stigma?

The audience quoted 3 real case studies. In one case, the parents and the only brother of a young girl also suffered from schizophrenia. Who will be the caretaker for this girl?

Somehow there was no question whether yoga will cure the disease. Such questions were expected, because the yoga teacher and few of yoga students were there in the audience.

The whole programme started in time and ended in time with vote of thanks by one nursing student from the audience.
